History of Pawna Lake
Pawna lake is an artificial reservoir created by the construction of the Pawna Dam between 1963 and 1972. The dam was built across the Pawna River in the Maval region to provide water for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. Beyond its natural beauty, Pawna Lake is surrounded by echoes of the past. The region is steeped in history, with its roots tracing back to the reign of the Maratha Empire. The nearby forts—Lohagad, Tikona, Tung, and Visapur—once served as strategic outposts guarding vital trade routes. Additionally, the Wagheshwar Temple, located on an island within the lake, is believed to date back several centuries, offering a glimpse into the area's spiritual heritage.
