About Shenbaga Devi Falls
Shenbaga Devi Falls is a 42-foot waterfall situated near Courtallam in the Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu. It is located within a forested area dominated by Shenbaga trees (Magnolia champaca). The falls take its name from the nearby temple dedicated to Shenbaga Devi, a form of Goddess Durga. This temple draws devotees, particularly on full moon days. The waterfall lies about 6.6 kilometres from Tenkasi town and is part of a region noted for both religious and ecological significance. The surrounding forest consists mainly of tropical dry deciduous and thorn scrub, characteristic of the Western Ghats foothills.
About Shenbaga Devi Falls Trek
The trek to Shenbaga Devi Falls begins at Courtallam and covers a distance of approximately 2 kilometres in one direction. The walk, including halts, usually takes around three hours to complete. The path runs through the Chitraruvi forest section, following the edge of a stream and passing through areas where rock inscriptions are found. The terrain is mostly natural, with uneven ground and shaded stretches. An expert trek leader leads each group, ensuring that walkers stay on the marked route and providing occasional explanations related to the vegetation, terrain, and local practices.
The forest along the trail is home to several animal species that are sometimes visible along the way. These include sambar deer, spotted deer, lion-tailed macaques, giant squirrels, and monitor lizards. Bird sounds and the movement of smaller creatures are common throughout the walk. The trail leads to a pool formed at the base of the Shenbaga Devi Falls, bordered by natural rock and clusters of Shenbaga trees. The area serves as a resting point before the return. As part of the arranged trek, light refreshments are made available to participants during the course of the walk.
