The residents are mainly plantation workers and caretakers. There are no tourist accommodations, and staying in the area requires sharing basic facilities with locals, which is not commonly allowed.

The trek from Kalikesam to Maramalai covers approximately 12 kilometres, including both onwards and return journeys, and reaches an elevation of about 520 metres. The path goes through clove farms and dry evergreen woodlands. The topography ranges from flat plantation walks to rough forest trails. Trekkers may see wildlife along the trail, such as local birds and reptiles.

An old plantation structure serves as a resting point for trekkers, offering them the chance to enjoy tea and snacks. Trekkers are accompanied by local guides who provide knowledge about the history of the plantations as well as the local flora and animals. The trek takes a straightforward route through a serene, lesser-known natural area with no infrastructure for tourists.
