If you opt to scale the Sigiriya rock climb on your own, it may take you 3-4 hours to climb up the 1200 steps, depending on your speed. It is not advisable to climb the rock in one go. To avoid dehydration and fatigue, break the climb into sections and enjoy the panoramic views on your way to the top. Drink plenty of water too.

What is the best time to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress?

To avoid harsh sunlight and scorching heat, it is advisable to begin your journey uphill at the earliest possible time in the morning. Our itinerary is planned in such a way that you will arrive at Sigiriya at 9.30 am, after which you will begin your ascent uphill. This will help you avoid the scorching heat that hits the region around midday.

The climb to the top is moderately difficult, and there is no overhead protection from the sun, so it is best to plan your climb early during the day.

Is it safe to trek on Sigiriya Rock Fortress?

Hundreds of tourists hike to the top of the fortress every day, so yes, it is completely safe. There are several resting stops during the climb where you can take a few minutes to catch your breath. There are a few hornet nests along the side of the rock wall, and signboards have been placed warning people to not disturb the hornets.

It is advisable to sit down on the steps and stay quiet when they fly out, but that rarely happens. In conclusion, the trek is completely safe, if only a little arduous.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress is about 177 kilometers away from Colombo, and the main mode of transportation is via road. You can hire a taxi or take a bus to the destination. It will take you about 4-5 hours to get to Sigiriya from Colombo. There is also a railway station at Habarana which is 15 kilometers away from Sigiriya. However, if you book the tour with us, you will be picked up by our driver from your hotel or desired pick up point within the city. You will then be driven to Sigiriya.

What we can see while trekking on Sigiriya rock?

The climb is broken into sections of 20 steps at a time, and there are several places that act as resting pads. Witness the beautiful landscape of the city on your way up, and take plenty of photos. The emerald green forests stretch out as far as the eye can see. The eye pleasing vistas are just as rejuvenating for the mind. Halfway up the climb, you will get to witness the famous frescoes - paintings of busty women in an iconic gallery.

Originally, there were nearly 500 paintings, but now only 21 survive. The paintings are believed to be Kasyapa's consorts, although modern historians believe they are apsaras. Once you get past the gallery, the pathway runs to the Mirror Wall, about which legends say that it was once so well polished with lime, eggs, beeswax, and honey that people could see their reflection in it.
