Explore the lesser-known side of Srinagar’s Mughal past at Pathar Mosque, built in 1623 by Empress Noor Jahan with Kashmir tour packages. Located in the Zaina Kadal area of the old city, this mosque stands out for being constructed entirely of grey limestone. It combines Persian influence with a regional reworking of Islamic architecture in its flat roof, nine-arched entrances, and absence of a central dome.

The subtle, fortress-like presence of Pathar Mosque, in contrast to other large Mughal mosques, highlights its distinctive architectural purpose. Historically, it also tells the story of religious and political tension, having once been barred from use for public worship. Today, it quietly functions as a neighbourhood mosque, preserving centuries of layered history within its thick stone walls.

Surrounding the mosque, winding lanes lead to old timber-framed homes, copper artisan workshops, and bustling street markets selling everything from saffron to Samovar tea. A trip here offers a glimpse into the historic and cultural heart of Srinagar.
