Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is a heaven for avian life. Every year, more than 60 species of birds flock to the sanctuary to escape the harsh and inhospitable winters of Siberia, Central Asia and Europe. These include gulls, terns, sandpipers, herons, cormorants, and whimbrels. The sanctuary is native to Malabar hornbills, kingfishers, darters, woodpeckers, and Brahminy kites. The wetlands provide both food and shelter to these wandering birds. Apart from birdwatching, you can enjoy activities like boat rides, nature walks, wildlife photography, picnics and hiking, making it a must for things to do in Calicut.
Kadalundi is about 21 kilometres away from Kozhikode and holds a lot of historic significance, dating back to the Sangam period, 300 BCE- 300 CE. You can book a boat tour for an extensive and thorough exploration of the place. Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary provides amazing opportunities for bird-watching enthusiasts. Some of the species that can be spotted here include Sandwich Tern, Black headed Gull, Brown headed Gull, Redshank, Greenshank, Common Sandpiper, and Black Tailed godwit.
The beautiful Kadalundi River is easily accessible from the sanctuary. You can experience the traditional Kerala way of fishing here with bamboo traps during high tides. The boating ticket in Kalalundi Bird Sanctuary is 800 rupees for an hour and 1500 rupees for 2 hours. The boat can accommodate 8 people at most. It is an excellent way to explore the bird sanctuary with a guided tour of the place.
