About Barcelona Zoo

The Barcelona zoo covers an area of around 22 acres and has around 4000 animals of over 400 different species. The zoo participates in over 100 different conservation programs to help save endangered species all over the world.

Considered to be one of the largest and best zoos in the world, the Barcelona Zoo boasts of a wide array of attractions as well as activities, which makes it one of the top tourist destinations in the city.

Ever since its opening, the Barcelona Zoo has been the abode of a wide array of rare species of wildlife, ranging from red pandas, African wild dogs and the Iberian lynx, to babirusas, giant anteaters, snow panthers, Hawaiian geese, bongos, the Spanish imperial eagle as well as the Mediterranean monk seal, among others.

The zoo is quite well-maintained and is complete with a variety of walking trails, beautiful sculptures, restaurants and cafes, and shops as well as picnic areas and special zones for children.

How To Reach Barcelona Zoo

  • By Tram/ Metro :You can take a tram ride or avail the metro and get off at the L4-Ciutadella Vila Olimpica station, which is located just a short walk away from the Barcelona Zoo. 
  • By Bus: You can also take a bus ride from different parts of the city to get to the Barcelona Zoo. Some of the buses that operate to the zoo are bus numbers 36, 39, 40, 51, 92, B20, B25, H14, V21, and V27. The nearest bus stop from the zoo is the Av Icària - Joan Miró which is only a 3 minute walk away.

The best time to visit the Barcelona Zoo is during the morning hours, around 10:00 a.m., which is when the zoo opens for the day. This is when there are lesser crowds in the zoo, and you can explore the zoo at your own pace.

You can also try to visit the zoo during the weekdays, as the crowd is less on those days, giving you plenty of time to enjoy and learn about each creature.

This zone is named after Komodo Dragons, which are found in abundance in Barcelona Zoo. The Land of Dragons zone is home to 5 species of animals from the Asia Pacific region and is famous for having created the natural habitat of these animals here. In addition to Komodo Dragons, you can also find species such as the Muntjac Deer, the Nicobar Pigeon, the Java Sparrow as well as the Lyle’s Flying Foxes here.

The Aviary in Barcelona Zoo is one of the largest in Europe and is home to over hundreds of birds from 70 different species, representing the ecosystems of Asian, African as well as American forests. The aviary is divided into different sections, each with its own climate and vegetation, to recreate the birds' natural habitats as closely as possible. Some of the birds that you can witness here include the white pheasant pigeon, blacksmith lapwing, green-backed heron and little bittern.

One of the most popular areas in the zoo, especially amongst the little visitors, the Farm is home to animals such as pigs, donkeys, horses, goats, cows, sheep as well as ponies. The Gorilla Zone at Barcelona Zoo is a special enclosure where gorillas can live and play in a more natural environment. The enclosure is made up of trees, vines, and plants, and there is also a pond for the gorillas to cool off in.
